Welcome to the Shiawassee County Surname File housed at the Owosso Branch of the Shiawassee District Library. The original version consists of 50 drawers of index cards, in excess of 62,000 cards total! In 1999, the card file was converted into this searchable database with funding, in part, from a federal Library Services and Technology Act subgrant from the Institute of Museum & Library Services, administered by the Library of Michigan, the Mideastern Michigan Library Cooperative and the Shiawassee District Library.
Information includes cemetery records, as well as data from family group sheets submitted to the Shiawassee County Genealogical Society. While most of the information relates to Shiawassee County, there are no geographical limitations on the people included. No new information is currently being added to the index.
When you search the database, you search not only for the last name of the subject of the card, but also any other surname on the card (mother, father, spouse, spouse's mother, spouse's father) as well as the notes field.
- You are searching on the last name of the person who is the subject of the record, as well as the last name of his/her mother, father, spouse, spouse's mother, and spouse's father. The notes field is also searched.
- You may enter partial names. For example, a search for gill will pull up people named Gill, Gillet, and Gillman.
- To search for a name with a space or an apostrophe, substitute an underscore instead (the underscore is next to the zero key and requires the <Shift> key). For example, to find Van Dyke, type van_dyke. To find O'Neil, type o_neil.
